This is a role well suited to an ambitious professional, looking for the next step in their career. As a R&D Controls and Automation Director, you will be responsible for:
Leading the Controls and Automation Team best practices, controls and automation activities and development of new or existing products from inception to commercialization. You will provide management, leadership, technical and project management expertise to support the development of medical robots. You are highly proficient with current development tools, best practices, processes and experienced in system integration. You are highly experienced in controls and automation design, including designing and/or selecting sensors and actuators, control systems in general and motion systems in particular, servo-systems modeling, analysis, testing, and implementation. This is a player-coach role in which you have the opportunity to both coach a team of talented engineers and also have technical contribution individually.
Ideal candidates have prior management experience including hiring, coaching, training and building high-performing teams and have designed, implemented, and launched complex electro-mechanical or medical robotic systems comprised of electronics hardware and real-time control software for a medical robotics technology platform.
This is a collaborative opportunity where the individual will work with other engineering disciplines, product management, quality assurance, and manufacturing.

- Team Leadership:
- Hire, lead, mentor, and manage a team of engineers, providing guidance, support, and professional development to ensure high performance and innovation.
- Assess the growth needs of each team member, set individual goals, and support them through to achieve those goals. Contribute to the performance reviews.
- Design and Development:
- Lead/contribute to the system architecture through design tradeoffs and down-selection between mechanical, electrical, and control domains.
- Direct the design and development of controls and automation systems, including the integration of mechanical, electrical, and control systems. Ensure designs meet regulatory standards and are optimized for performance, reliability, and safety through ownership of verification and validation activities.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams including software developers, and clinical experts to integrate solutions into medical robotic systems.
- Implement and oversee testing and validation processes to ensure the reliability and accuracy of controls and automation systems. Address and resolve any issues related to system performance or safety.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to address complex technical challenges and provide innovative solutions.
- Use of systems engineering approach, implement best practices in model-based design methodologies, development processes and tools.
- Work closely with the systems engineering team to ensure clear design inputs and risk analysis/risk based design.
- Ensure the completeness of design inputs, requirements, risk management (e.g., dFMEA), and traceability, create design descriptions and specifications, author testing protocols, conduct and/or oversee testing, and issue resolution.
- Leads/Supports any multi-disciplinary issue resolution activities.
- Ensure thorough documentation of design specifications, testing protocols, and development processes. Maintain accurate records for compliance and future reference.
- Processes & infrastructure:
- Drive continuous improvement, best practices, and innovation in mechatronics technologies and methodologies. Stay current with industry trends and emerging tools and technologies.
- Assess and improve controls and automation infrastructure (HW, FW/SW, Processes) to fulfill the current and future need of organization and across all projects and subsystems.
- Technical Expertise:
- Strong knowledge of controls and automation principles, including sensors and actuators, control systems and methods, electronics, mechanical engineering and robotics. Proficiency in simulation tools, and programming languages relevant to controls and automation (MATLAB, Simulink, Simscape, Embedded and programming languages, and tools).
- Deep knowledge of medical device regulations, standards, and quality assurance processes (e.g., FDA, ISO 13485, IEC 62304) is required.
- Project Management:
- Oversee the planning, execution, and completion of controls and automation projects. Develop project timelines in conjunction with Program Management, allocate resources, coordinate meetings, and ensure adherence to project milestones and budgets.
Required/Desired skills to have for the success of this role
- MSc. degree in controls, automation, robotics, electrical, or computer science is required. PhD is preferred.
- Minimum 15 yrs. experience in the product development role, with at least ten years in medical device development, or other regulated industry, and at least eight years people management experience required.
- Hands on Experience in the design, development, analyses, integration, testing and troubleshooting of robotic systems required.
- Strong analytical skills in controls and automation and electromechanical domain are required. Deep understanding of electronics and design of PCBAs is required.
- Experience in designing control systems and algorithm is required.
- Proficiency in MATLAB, Simulink(Real Time)/Simscape, LabVIEW, and embedded and programing languages is required
- Proficiency in sensors, actuators (performance appraisal, down-selection, etc.), cabling, motion systems, servo-systems modeling, analysis, and implementation required.
- Experience in developing electromechanical test or build fixtures are required.
- Experience with real-time application programing and RTOS for products is highly desired
- Experience with the latest mechanical CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks), and the simulation tools are highly desired.
- 5 years project management experience is highly desired.
- Strong communication and leadership skills required
- Ability to travel up to 10% is required

The annual base pay for this position is:
Min $180,000 - Max $270,000Factors which may affect starting pay within this range may include geography/market, skills, education, experience, and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
If this is a commission eligible position the commission eligibility will be in accordance with the terms of the Company's plan. Commissions are based on individual performance and/or company performance.
